Diversity in the Workplace As stated in our book, workplace diversity is defined as â€Å"diversity at work means having a workface comprised of two or more groups of employees with various racial, ethic, gender, cultural, national origin, handicap, age, and religious backgrounds†. There are many positives and also negatives of diversity in the workplace. Some of the negatives from workplace diversity are stereotyping, discrimination, tokenism, ethnocentrism, and also gender- role stereotypes. Some positives include increased productivity, increased creativity and problem solving, helps to attract and retain talent, improves team building and enhances communication skills, helps to diversify customer base, according to a blog on†¦show more content†¦Target maintains diversity in a much different than the other two companies we have discussed, because they are in a retail environment it makes it much more difficult. Target is improving its diversity management with a s trong focus on talent development. They have a very strong mentoring program which has been a model for other diversity orientated businesses. Target was named Top Company for Mentoring by DiversityInc, last year. Target’s statement of diversity is At Target, diversity is much more than a goal or campaign. It’s a core value we integrate into every area of our business—from our suppliers, to our teams, to the shopping experience in our stores. We foster an inclusive culture that allows our high-performing and diverse team to drive innovation according to their corporate website. This statement of diversity shows how important this issue is to Target, they even extend it to their suppliers and to their customers, for a better shopping experience. This is significant to me because it shows they are always striving to be better and more innovative, that they aren’t just worried about corporate profits but that they want to actually make the lives of their emp loyees and customers better. These are reasons I picked Target off of this last and continue to shop there and not stores like Wal-Mart. Marriage Is An Important Part Of Their Culture And Heritage

Marriage Culture For certain countries arranged marriage is an important part of their culture and heritage. Like in the essay What’s Love Got to Do with It? by Anjula Razdan, Anjula’s family that immigrated to America from the country of India believed in arranged marriage because that was the culture they were a part of before they left India. In India the grandfather chooses who he thinks is the best suitable partner for his grandchild, which is nothing like how Americans choose their life partners. While Americans believe in marrying for love, that might not be the best way of marriage for other countries due to family reactions, success rates, and the benefits of marriage. The family’s reaction is a very important part of marriage. How your family feels about your soon to be husband or wife helps to show if the marriage is a good or bad idea. In arranged marriage the family chooses who they think will benefit you and them the most, and most of the time your parents do know what is best for you. Mr Heng also touched on the diversification of the school system over the last few years, explaining the need to create multiple pathways for students to excel. It is also critical to equip students with the basic knowledge and motivation to be lifelong and adaptable learners and have other 21st century skills such as information and communication know-how, critical and inventive thinking, and civil literacy and cross-cultural skills. Ultimately though, he said, the best policies alone are not enough. Ministry officials and school leaders must be clear about the principles and there must be ‘fidelity of implementation’. All parts of the education system must support the policy implementation, including the teachers, parents and even the physical facilities of a school. Educators will remain key to the structure. ‘No system of education can be better than its teachers,’ he said. During his visit here over the past week, American officials have heaped praises on the Singapore education system and during the panel discussion following his speech, similar responses flowed. Panellist Linda Darling-Hammond, a Stanford University professor in education, said the US could learn from Singapore’s teacher recruitment and development process. Praising the Singapore Government’s policy of paying teachers ‘top dollar’, she noted that by comparison, the US paid its teachers ‘much, much less than other college graduates’. The deep cuts in education spending in the US, she warned, would leave the country behind while other countries like Singapore forged ahead with their investments in education.
